DURANGO, Colo. — Fort Lewis College has been recognized for its growing research contributions with a Research Colleges and Universities designation in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications. Carnegie introduced the new classification to highlight institutions that invest at least $2.5 million annually in research and development, even if they do not offer doctoral programs. “The Carnegie classification highlights the incredible work happening across our campus and the meaningful contributions our students and faculty are making,” said Provost Mario Martinez. “The grants that result in faculty and student research at FLC are deeply connected to hands-on learning and community engagement FLC reported $3.37 million in research expenditures in 2023, as tracked through the National Science Foundation’s Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey for 2021, 2022, and 2023. The designation reflects the total research expenditures reported over that period. Martinez noted that since July 2023, FLC’s total research portfolio has grown from $36 million to nearly $50 million as of December 2024, a 39% increase over 18 months. “FLC’s expanding research footprint creates more opportunities for students to tackle real-world challenges, collaborate with experts, and gain invaluable experience that will shape their careers and impact their communities,” said Interim President Steve Schwartz. “This designation reaffirms our commitment to research that makes a tangible difference in the Four Corners region and beyond.”
