Durango locals and Fort Lewis College alumni Chase and Jen LaCroix are marking 10 years of success with Durango Outdoor Exchange, their outdoor gear consignment shop that has become a cornerstone of the community. Since founding the business in 2014, the couple has combined their passion for sustainability with a mission to make outdoor adventures more accessible to everyone. Jen, originally from Aurora, Colorado, fell in love with Durango during a childhood visit and knew Fort Lewis College was where she wanted to be. She pursued a degree in sociology and human services while Chase majored in business economics. They credit their time at FLC for shaping their community-driven and entrepreneurial mindset. “Chase uses his business education every day in our shop, and my sociology background helps us bring that community focus into what we do,” Jen LaCroix said. Their business was born out of a simple idea: they wanted a place to shop for used outdoor gear in Durango. When a friend encouraged them to start their own store, they took the leap, filling a gap in the local market. The shop promotes sustainability by giving outdoor gear a second life and creating affordable options for adventure enthusiasts. The LaCroixs’ journey began in a small, quirky building on College Drive. As the business grew, they moved to a remodeled space on North Main, previously a Pizza Hut. The new location offered the space and accessibility needed to serve their growing customer base. Jen and Chase’s love for the Durango community runs deep. “The people here are so special. Durango has a unique way of weathering storms and standing together,” Jen said. The couple’s commitment to the town extends beyond their business, as they continue to participate in local events and initiatives. After a decade of success, the LaCroixs remain passionate about their mission to promote sustainability, build community, and help others enjoy the outdoor adventures that first drew them to Durango.
