3-day Rio Chama Itinerary

River miles: 31
Days on the river: 3
Nights on the river: 2

The Rio Chama is a Wild and Scenic River located in northwest New Mexico, and a major tributary of the Rio Grande. From the El Vado dam the Chama winds through canyons of multi-colored rock and wooded slopes before spilling into the open desert. The limited dam releases and short boating season make this beautiful river a highly sought-after float trip.

Day 1: Early morning travel from Durango to El Vado Ranch (3 hours). Once we arrive at the ranch, FLOW guides will rig boats and we will get on the river. This float through canyon country passes old homesteads and hot springs with a few rapids to keep things splashy.

Day 2: The canyon deepens on the second day, with large ponderosa pines providing protection from the desert heat. Side hikes to the canyon rim at Rio Cebolla or to the dinosaur tracks in Dark Canyon provide an opportunities to stretch your legs.

Day 3: With an early start, we leave the canyons behind as we wind toward Big Eddy for our longest day on the river. The iconic Monastery of Christ in the Desert is an impressive landmark before cooling off in the biggest rapids. We will take off the river late-afternoon at either Chavez Canyon, or Big Eddy.
