Common Reading Experience welcomes author and artist Joy Harjo to Durango

The Fort Lewis College Common Reading Experience (CRE) is back for another year. Each year, the CRE selects a book to be discussed across campus. The memoir Crazy Brave by Joy Harjo is the 2018 selection.

Joy Harjo will visit Durango and Fort Lewis College for a number of events beginning Monday, February 12 and running through Wednesday, February 14. The centerpiece of her visit will be a keynote address and book signing on February 12 from 7-9 p.m. in Whalen Gym at FLC. The keynote is free and open to everyone.

On February 13, a free musical performance and discussion will be held in Roshong Recital Hall in Jones Hall at 9:30 a.m. That will be followed by a fundraiser lunch for the Images literary organization on campus. The lunch will begin at noon in the Vallecito Room. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by contacting Candace Nadon at canadon@fortlewis.edu. Concluding Tuesday’s schedule will be a poetry masterclass, also held in the Vallecito Room, at 2:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, February 14, the Common Reading Experience will move off campus to the Henry Strater Theatre on Main Avenue for a concert benefitting KSUT. The concert, called “An Evening with Joy Harjo & Poetic Justice,” begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and are available at http://henrystratertheatre.com.

Crazy Brave tells Harjo’s story of surviving a challenging and abusive upbringing to become an acclaimed Native American artist. Among her literary awards are the 2015 Wallace Stevens Award from the Academy of American Poets, the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, and the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America.
